Why I Serve

Have you ever been rudely interrupted by a knock on your door or a ringing of your doorbell only to find two young men in suits standing on your front door step? Or maybe two young women? They were probably dressed very nicely; suits or just white shirts and ties? I’m sure they introduced themselves as representatives, or missionaries, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I know because I am one of these young men. I have knocked on many doors and talked with many people on their door steps.

Have you ever wondered why they were standing there talking to you in the rain, snow, or sunshine? So why do we take the time to go from door to door to talk to people like you? Why do we face rejection? Why do we interrupt your meal, nap, or any other activity? Why do we sometimes chase you down on the street  to try to talk and get to know you?

The answer is simple. We know how much the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ has blessed our lives and we want you to have the same blessings. Christ commanded his apostles shortly before his ascension back into heaven to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Mathew 28:18-19). After his resurrection he asked Peter three times if Peter loved him. Peter’s response was obviously yes. Christ’s response was to “Feed my sheep” (John 21:15-17). There are countless scriptures that teach, command, and exhort those who have faith in Christ to invite others to come unto him. But for me at least, it is a little bit more than just that.

If you went to a restaurant and tried a new dish (Perhaps a Monte burger from Montana Club) and loved it, or Maybe you could even say to yourself that it was the best meal that you have ever had. Would you want to keep it a secret or tell everyone you know? I know I would want to tell people. That is how the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is for me. It is sooo good! Though it is a commandment to do missionary work, to me it is even more then that. I KNOW that anyone who accepts our message, or in reality Christ’s message, will be happy! Our message is unique; it includes modern day prophets, restoration of priesthood, another testament of Jesus Christ, and answers to life’s greatest questions.Their lives will be blessed in so many ways! I cannot keep it to myself! That is why we knock on your door. That is why we go from door after door after door. That is why we face rejection, harsh words, slammed doors, and disappointment. That is why we may chase you down on the street and seem like we are crazy. That is why we don’t give up if you tell us to come back some other time.  It is simply because we want you to have what we have. We are not out here for ourselves. We want you to find happiness in this life and the kind of happiness that lasts through the eternities. We want to invite you to come unto our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

One response to “Why I Serve

  1. Elder I am a convert of over three years now, just a little bit over. I left my old church because each time I would question their teachings by what I read in the Bible I would get called all kinds of names. I left the place and searched and prayed for the truth for what seemed like forever when it was only a couple of months. One afternoon I was hanging in a place I should not have been in but I didn’t know where else to go. I felt promptings to leave but I didn’t want to go back to the pastors house where i lived at the times but i couldn’t ignore the feeling to leave.

It was about four o’clock or so and I started slowly walking toward the house when I saw two young men up ahead in the distance and i think i rolled my eyes a time or two. I didn’t want to talk to them so I was going to cross the street but as soon as i thought it the thought was gone and I stayed on that side of the street. As I approached them i uttered: “I’m going home, blah blah blah…” But within a few words I knew I wasn’t going anywhere of the kind. I looked into their eyes and saw a light that was promised to me back at the old hangout. “There’s a light at the end of the tunnel so just hang on” It was that light. But, I had been duped before and was cautious; I told them that if they couldn’t back up what they were saying by scriptures I wouldn’t bother to listen; they did just that.

On the way home I read the pamphlet three times and each time I got more excited. That first little booklet answered some of my question that I couldn’t get answers to. I called the Elders right away and went to church the next day. I had my first lesson after church and two weeks later I was baptized.

This was everything I knew was there because it was in the Bible. I was so excited and burning with joy inside that I think the Elders had to sit on me a time or two to prevent me from floating away. I testify to you that this church is true and everything it teaches is also true. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and a real person, he would have to be I am related to him. I know that he saw Father and Jesus in the grove that day. Through his obedience he brought about The Restoration of the Gospel and of the Lords true church. I have never regretted my decision.

I leave this with you in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
Brother Paul Howey (Saginaw Ward: Saginaw, MI)
